Spring Cleaning: Air Quality Edition

April 30, 2021 by Writers

Colorful flowers and twigs on white marble counterNow that Atlanta’s annual deluge of tree pollen is almost over, it’s time to do some spring cleaning around the house. Washing windows, vacuuming cobwebs, and doing all of those annual deep cleaning chores will make your home feel sparklingly clean and fresh. But spring cleaning can also have another benefit: Improving your home’s indoor air quality!

Why Indoor Air Quality Matters

You’re probably aware that Atlanta’s air quality leaves much to be desired, with our infamous traffic contributing to some of the worst air pollution in the U.S. However, it’s not just the air outside that you need to worry about. Indoor air quality also plays a major role in our health, especially for kids, elderly people, and people with respiratory illnesses.

Short-Term Potential Effects of Poor Indoor Air Quality

  • Irritation to eyes, nose, and throat
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness

Long-Term Potential Effects of Poor Indoor Air Quality

  • Respiratory diseases
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer

Spring Cleaning Air Quality Tips from the Pros

At Clean Environmental Group, our mission is to help homeowners, organizations, and institutions all over Atlanta breathe easier with environmental services like mold removal, lead paint remediation, and asbestos removal. Keep these things in mind while you’re doing your spring cleaning and upkeep.

Look out for mold.

Mold can cause major health issues, so if you come across mold on walls, baseboards, ceilings, vents, appliances, ceiling fans, or other locations, approach with caution. Even the odor of mold can indicate a greater problem, and it is unfortunately not one you want to handle yourself. If not properly treated, mold can make you and your family sick. Some clients are shocked to discover that they and their children get sick less often and have less “allergy” symptoms after we remove mold from the household. We are fully insured, certified, and experienced in removing mold, and we can help you get mold out as safely and effectively as possible.

Steer clear of hazardous materials.

As you clean your home, be aware of other possible health hazards as well. Older buildings may contain lead paint or asbestos that, if disturbed, can cause serious health problems. If your home was built prior to 1978, it’s more likely to have both of these environmental hazards. Even simple repairs or cleaning tasks can send dangerous particles into the air, so don’t hesitate to call us for testing and removal.

Be aware of indoor air pollution from cleaning products.

Lastly, be careful with the cleaning products you use during your spring cleaning spree. Some household cleaners put out very strong fumes, and if you’re using several types of cleaners, you can end up creating a toxic mix. Any strong-smelling cleaner should be used with ventilation, so open your windows and set up a fan to blow the fumes outside. Keep in mind that young children and pets are much smaller than you, and it will take less exposure to negatively affect them than it would for you.
